How to review Chinese vocabulary in context

Keep pronunciation, sentence meaning and word combinations together. Use recall prompts and fresh contexts to check Chinese vocabulary, then adjust your next review.

Recognizing a familiar word on a list is different from understanding or using it with the list closed. Check separately whether you recognize its sound, understand it in a sentence and recall it when expressing an idea. Success at one task does not automatically establish all three.

Use a few words you have actually encountered for a complete review cycle. Adjust the quantity and timing to your own performance. This guide is not an official vocabulary list or a fixed word target for an HSK level.

Keep the context where you met the word

Choose words from a lesson, practice passage or other material you can check. Save the original sentence, pronunciation, meaning in that sentence and a common word combination. Prioritize words that block understanding instead of adding every unfamiliar word to today’s task.

A word can have several meanings. Check the current context first, then consult a reliable dictionary or teacher if the meaning is uncertain. Copying one isolated translation may not help you understand the next sentence containing that word.

Turn a note into a small question

For example, record 安排 with this original sentence: “我想先安排一下明天的时间。” The speaker wants to organize tomorrow’s time first. One prompt can describe the situation and ask you to supply the word. Another can show the Chinese sentence and ask what the speaker plans to do.

Make the prompt clear without putting the answer directly on its front. At first, keep pinyin or a context clue if needed, then gradually reduce the help. Explaining the meaning in a familiar language can check understanding; you do not need a long Chinese response for every item.

Attempt recall, then check and correct

Hide the answer and try to say or write the word. Then check pronunciation, meaning and its word combination. If you cannot recall it, try a small hint before opening the answer and correcting the attempt. Record an answer that needed a hint separately from successful independent recall.

Experiments on foreign-language vocabulary support including retrieval attempts in learning. They do not predict an HSK score or show that flashcards alone cover language learning. Return the vocabulary to listening, reading and real contexts for expression.

Change the sentence to check more than a memorized answer

Revisit the original sentence, then read a new example using the same word or write a short sentence about your own life. For 安排, move from organizing tomorrow’s time to arranging a meeting: 安排一次见面. Check that the combination fits the intended meaning.

Compare confusing words in separate sentences. Ask who does what and what role each word plays. Keep an uncertain expression as a question for a teacher or reliable reference rather than inventing a usage just to finish the card.

Let recall guide the next review

Use three categories: recalled independently, needed a hint and still unclear. Prioritize the latter two next time. Check familiar words after a longer gap as appropriate, and try another context instead of always repeating the same card.

Spacing research indicates that review timing depends partly on the intended retention period. A return on another day or later can be an initial arrangement to adjust after checking the results. If reviews build up, reduce new words first. A recurring difficulty gives you more direction than an ever-growing total.

Add your own vocabulary notes after HSKOn practice

HSKOn is an independent practice aid for HSK written levels 1–6. Its website describes mistake review and progress records that can help locate material to revisit. You can also keep your own notes for vocabulary and context. The app is in beta; check its website and app information for features and public downloads. HSKOn is not an official exam organization.
